I wanted to know whats the best way to learn Muay Thai?

I'm a freshmen in college and on the football team. I just wanted to learn the basics of Muay Thai to defend myself since I can't fight. Whats the best way to learn Muay Thai without a instructor because I don't have any near my campus.What books would you recommend to get the basics. Some additional train methods are welcomed.

And what equipment would I need ?
Would it be ok to get just a punching bag and some gloves and knee protector.

By the i know their are multiple stances and styles of Muay Thai but which do you thing would fit me best beside basics.

My weight is 260 and I am 6"3" I am slim but have wide shoulders.
and would i need to buy wrap for my hand

I do not suggest you try to take up any type of martial arts without an instructor. You could seriously hurt yourself doing the most basic kick by doing it improperly.

A friend of mine got a little too excited and started trying to kick the bag like he saw us doing in class. Unfortunately, he didn't have the core strength or rotation down and ended up pulling a muscle along his oblique area. He's been out of commission for 3 weeks.

Your conditioning, core, stamina and endurance is probably better than most, but why risk getting hurt. If there are no Muay-Thai classes around take up something else like combat training, mma, judo, ninjitsu, etc...
