Telephoto Lens Nikon
Question about upgrading to a Nikon f2.8 telephoto lens?
I have a Nikon D90. My current telephoto lens is a 70-300 f4.5-5.6. I would really like to get to f2.8 and the one I can afford is the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR. Would you consider this a good upgrade despite losing 100mm in focal length? I do have a Kenko 1.4 teleconverter that I could use. Thanks all!
While moving to the 70-200mm f/2.8 lens is an upgrade in many ways, it is up to you whether the loss of the 300mm focal length is important or whether you really need f/2.8. While I've never used Kenko's teleconverter, I do know that the 1.4x teleconverters made by both Canon and Nikon cost you 1 f-stop of light. The means that the 70-200mm f/2.8 would be a 98-280mm f/4 with the 1.4x teleconverter. My guess is Kenko's teleconverter offers identical stats. So long as you are aware of these facts, you should be fine. There is one other practical consideration you should think about aside from the focal length issue (which may not be a significant issue at all).
A 70-200mm f/2.8 lens weighs twice as much as a 70-300mm variable aperture zoom. This is not a minor issue for casual photographers. A great many people buy 70-200mm f/2.8 only to discoverr how heavy it is and how little practical difference it makes in terms of image quality. That said, some people choose to own both lenses because if you really need the performance and features of the f/2.8 zoom, little else will do. But when they can't afford the weight penalty, many will default back to the 70-300mm as a lightweight alternative. I fall into this category and I can tell you that if I'm traveling, my 24-70mm and 70-200mm f/2.8 zooms for my full-frame camera usually stay home if I'm trying to travel light. Instead I'll carry a 24-105mm f/4 zoom and a 70-300mm zoom. When I shot nothing but "crop-body" cameras like your D90, the 24-105 might instead be a 17-85mm or similar zoom lens.
