Focal length range of film 70-300mm lens changes when attached to a digital SLR?

I have a Nikon/Nikkor film 70-300 mm telephoto zoom lens. Does this focal length range change if I attach the same lens to a Nikon digital SLR? What's the conversion formula?

The focal length of a film 70-300mm does not "change" at all; it merely crops (leaves OUT a portion of what you're photographing) as though it were a 105-450mm lens; to know how a lens for a film camera will react on digital Nikon (DSLR) cameras, multiply 1.5x70, and multiply 1.5x300 and you get 105 and 450 respectively.

Let me try to explain that. If you have 50mm lens on a digital, it would leave out part of the scene as if you were using a 75mm lens because the sensor is smaller than the plane (the flat area) where the film lies; in other words, the film lens is intended for an ara that is 1.5 times larger. So, to determine how much the cropping effect is, multiply the focal length of the lens by 1.5 and the same with any lens intended for film photography. I hope this helps you.

Although the lens mount is the same, that is why DX lenses (for digital cameras) will have a vingnetting effect around the image if used on film cameras. DX lenses are intended exclusively for digital cameras.
