When you're trying to get to grips with his new camera can be difficult to understand all the terms used to describe different functions. This article will simplify many of the terms and give greater access to unleash the power of digital images under his hand.

Open: This is the hole that lets light into the camera. Its size is measured in f-stops, for example, f2.8, f5, f8. The higher the f number the smaller the diaphragm. Most cameras can be set automatically, although some have a manual override.

Autofocus: This ensures the object in the frame - usually by pressing the trigger.

Burst mode: Sometimes you may want to take a sequence of shots in rapid succession. Burst mode and will when you hold the shutter button pushed down.

Compression: Digital images taken by the camera can be compressed so you can store more than a memory card. JPEG is often used. The larger the image compression image detail is lost more.

Composition: This is the art of framing your image. A simple guide is to utilize the rule of thirds. Place an object of interest of one third of the way along and a third of the way up or down. It makes a big difference.

Depth of Field: This is the amount of your image is in focus. In most compact cameras this is not really an issue as wide-angle lenses to maintain most of the image in focus. The depth of field is larger when the f-number is large. If the numbers are small f - say f2.8 - Then focus around one third in the image.

Digital Zoom: This allows the lens of the camera to digitally zoom the image to appear larger or closer. This is not as good as optical zoom uses the camera lens to achieve this goal.

DSLR: A single lens reflex digital camera. This will allow much greater control over image-making process, from full manual control over all settings for exposure to changing the lens of different focal lengths.

Exposure: This is the amount of time the shutter is open. You can manually change to give different practice. For example, in sports you may want to freeze the motion so you want a shorter exposure time. A long exposure time will do that water flowing silky and smooth.

Image stabilization: This prevents image blurring due to camera shake. When beginners take photographs often do not relax with the camera and this can lead to the moving camera when you press the shutter.

ISO: This measures the sensitivity of the camera to light. With high ISO settings you can use a shorter exposure time - useful if light levels are low. However, the high ISO settings, can generate more noise the image.

Objectives: A long focal length lens lets you get closer to the action, and a wide angle lens wide angle you can see everything and are good for landscapes. You can change lenses in a DSLR, but agreements usually have a zoom lens.

Memory Card: This is the bit that stores all the images. Its size is measured in gigabytes. The number of images you can store depends on the size of the card and the resolution of the image.

Noise: This is seen as random dots of color in the image. You get more of it in high ISO settings. To keep noise levels, keep the ISO setting as low as possible. It is so important unless you want to print photos out at A4 and above.

Displacement: This is a great effect where tracking a subject with the camera with a time long exposure.

Pixel: This image depicts Element. They are the building blocks of the image and can be seen as small dots or squares while extends in.

Red eye: When the flash bounces off the inside of the eye may get a red reflex. Many cameras can give a pre-flash to try to prevent this.

Resolution: This is measured in millions of pixels or megapixels. The more megapixels the more detail is captured. 12-14 megapixels is now the upper limit of compact cameras. If you receive many more than this to make the most noise in the image.

Scene Selection: cameras modern have a scene selection mode, for example, portraits, landscapes and night scenes. Choose these if you prefer the camera took total control.

Speed Shutter: This determines the exposure time. The higher the shutter speed, the shorter the exposure time.

Uploaded: Once which has taken the images, you have to climb to a computer.

Take some time to figure out what all these terms mean and will soon be making photographs that are the envy of all your friends.

What should I get wide-angle zoom?

I use a 1D Mk III, so I can not use any S-EF. I was thinking about the Sigma 12-24mm. What do you think you? Any suggestions for good wide angle zoom lens? Thanks!

Any Canon 16-35mm II 24-70mm f/2.8 or 2.8. I recently tested and the two are very good at 2.8, and even better at 4.0 Moreover, the 24-70 should balance MKIII body weight well. The only problem with the 16-35 is, of course, CA at the corners.
