Decreasing noise/loss from coaxial cable for TV's?
My house has one coaxial cable input from the cable company. I have about 6-7 TV's in the house now, so the original cable is being split up so many times and the lengths of cables are running all over the house that there is some video quality loss in the TV's. I'm getting a HDTV soon and I would like a strong signal for it.
Is there anything I can do to decrease this loss? I know from my electronics background that ceramic capacitors are good for filtering high frequency noise (and the video signal going through the coaxial cable is in the high MHz range), but I have no idea how I'd apply them in this case. There must be something I can buy to help with this problem, like a filter or cleaner for coaxial tv cable.
Everytime you split a coax cable's input you introduce loss. It doesn't matter if a TV is present or not just going through the splitter introduces loss.
A TV uses RF signal and that is measured in dB's. A typical cable input to your home is about 10-15 dB of signal. A 2 way splitter looses 3.5 dB per leg. A 3 way splitter looses 5.5 dB and so on, the more the splits the more signal loss.
A good TV picture requires a signal level of at least 3 dB. It will work down to -5dB but you will see a grainy picture. HD TV wants a good signal level.
There is NOTHING you can do to prevent the loss.
Here is what you need to do.
At the input (where the cable first comes into your home) put on a two way splitter. Take one leg as the HDTV feed the second leg into a 6 way splitter and look at the picture on your TV it should be OK. (Anlaog TV's work fine with a lower signal level) If it is not you can buy a low cost RF amp from Radio Shack or similar vendor for a few bucks.
CAUTION!!!! Don't put the amp on the HD leg or your digital cable might not work as it will not pass a return signal some cable companys require to make digital cable work properly.
Analog TV does not need a return signal. Put the amp on the 2nd output leg of the 2 way splitter then the amps output into the 6 way splitter.
If you have a cable modem you will need a 3 way split at the input so one leg to the HDTV, leg 2 cable modem, leg 3 to a splitter for the rest of the TV's in the home.
NOTE: the length of cable run within a home is not ususally a factor in signal loss. If you have used a good guality RG-6 cable the loss due to the length of the cable will be minimal. Unless the runs get to be 300 or more feet. Make sure the connectors are of good quality. You might even consider cutting off the cable ends and replacing them with high quality compression connectors.
