What have Sony Ericsson put inside it? Not a bigger battery, because the battery life seems to be almost exactly the same as the W910i. Maybe it's new firmware. That's it, Sony Ericsson has spent a whole year fixing the bugs in the W910i firmware, and the new firmware is so much better it weighs an extra 20 grams. Mystery solved.

OK, so this phone is just the same as the Sony Ericsson W995, except it's heavier and the bugs have been fixed. This makes it a fantastic phone. We loved the W910i when we first reviewed it. It was only after the user reviews started flooding in that it became obvious that there was a problem. The W595 is a nicely styled slide phone with a tapered top edge and a smooth slide action. It's an excellent size - not super-slim, but compact and good to hold. As a Walkman phone, it has music controls featured prominently when the slide is closed. The keypad is easy to use, despite the keys being a touch small, and it has an easy-to-use circular navigational key, not the dreaded joystick that appears on some of their models. The screen is large, bright and high resolution and the menus are clear and simple to navigate. Switch on the W595 and you'll be greeted by a bright and vibrant QVGA display with excellent layout and icons that are eminently readable.

Though currently exclusive to 3 Mobile in its most fetching color, the network has also thankfully taken something of a back seat and not customized the handset to high heaven meaning Sony Ericsson's latest menus - reminiscent of the PS3 and to be used on the eight megapixel C905 - remain intact and they are a pleasure to use. This enjoyable functionality is greatly enhanced too with a range of sensibly made hardware choices. For example, quad-band GSM means the phone is globe trotter friendly, while 3.6Mbps HSDPA is put to excellent use on the integrated YouTube app and surprisingly decent mobile browser. The Sony Ericsson W595 mobile phone is an MP3-playing handset that lets you share your favorite sounds. Not only does it have stereo speakers, it also has a twin headphone adaptor that allows someone else to plug into your phone. There's stereo Bluetooth compatibility as well. And controlling the phone is easy: 'shake control' lets you change track or increase the volume with a flick of your wrist!
