Nikon, Casio, Pentax, Canon, Panasonic, Fujifilm and many others use SD/SDHC memory cards. Sony does not, it uses a proprietary memory card called the Memory Stick.
The only other camera that does on use SD/SDHC cards is the Olympus that uses the xD memory card.
If you drop any P&S camera you will damage it. There are a few P&S models that now have some level of "ruggedizing" which allows short drops or even underwater photography possible ... those are made by Pentax and Olympus
