Single Coated Filters
What sort of filter should I get for my DSLR?
I have a simple kit lens that came with my Nikon D50 (28-80mm). I've heard lots about those little screw-on UV filters to protect the lens, but I've not bought one yet. I looked at them last night, and got confused with all the single-coated, multi-coated, mumbo jumbo.
I was able to see that my existing lens looks multi-coated (white light is reflected green). Do I really need a filter, or do you think my lens is providing adequate protection?
I think I decided that if I bought one, it would be a "Hoya 58mm multi-coated UV filter"
Your digital SLR does not need protection from UV light. There's already a filter over the sensor.
Some people advocate getting such a filter to protect the front element of the lens itself from physical damage. I am not one of them, as I have found that my lens hood and/or a lens cap does a much better job of actual protection. In fact, I find UV and skylight filters to reduce contrast and affect image quality by introducing another element in front of the lens, which also can cause unwanted reflections.

The only filter I regularly suggest having in your bag is a circular polarizer for darkening skies, intensifying color, or reducing reflections. Otherwise, I'd say get a filter and use it only for specific purposes, like a graduated neutral density for reducing sky intensity in landscapes, an IR filter for IR shots, etc.
