Pushing Flagship Boundaries to New Heights with the Nokia N900

A tad more expensive than many upscale mobile phones, the new handset promises to deliver the best value for a flagship mobile phone that is expected to redefine what an upscale mobile phone is.  Designed as a versatile business and messaging phone with multimedia and social networking features, the N900 promises to bring the mobile phone experience to new heights to put to rest who the undisputed king of mobile phone is.

Handsome looks with Cutting Edge Features

At 110.9 × 59.8 × 18 mm in size and weights about 180 grams, the new Nokia handset is anything but pocket-friendly.  With all its cutting edge features housed in an elegant all-black body, it’s amazing it can all be done at this size.  So don’t bother putting this on your pant pocket.  Get a phone holster or use your briefcase or laptop backpack to lug this around.

At first glance, the new N900 looks the same as its preceding Nokia N97 released early this year.  They both sport a tactile QWERTY slider form factor with a large 3.5? touchscreen.  But the N900 ups the screen resolution significantly.  It also doesn’t tilt the screen when fully slid out with none of the navigation keys of its predecessor.  But is it better?  We’ll get to it better at the Nokia World event this week but from the technical spec sheets, let’s see.

What Sets This Apart?

Underneath all that upscale design sophistication is a handset that’s basically a quad-band GSM/EDGE and a tri-band UMTS/HSPA with high speed data connectivity for 3G/HSDPA/HSUPA.  There’s a 5 megapixel 3X digital zoom camera with light-assisted autofocus that uses Carl Zeiss optics and Tessa lens, dual-LED flash, a CMOS sensor, and automatic geo-tagging.

WVGA video recording at a near film-quality 25 frames per second is supported.  You get an Integrated GPS receiver, Assisted-GPS, and Cell-based receivers supported by pre-loaded Ovi Maps. But what really sets the N900 above the flagship crowd are the following:

  • Its screen supports impressive WVGA resolution (800×480) with 24-bit 16 million colors depth at a 16:9 widescreen aspect that fills up all the screen real estate when watching modern movies. It’s got the usual accelerometer sensor for automatic landscape or portrait orientation with the corresponding tilt of the handset.
  • The handset uses the ARM Cortex A8 processor clocked at 600MHz with the OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics acceleration that allows desktop-like speeds in rendering polygons.
  • Rather than using the time-proven Symbian S60 OS, it runs on the Linux-based Maemo 5 platform that comes with the Mozilla-based Maemo browser that supports Adobe Flash 9.4.

It comes with a generous 32GB of internal memory storage with about 1 GB allotted as application memory.  If inadequate, you can start using its microSD expansion slot with a 48GB microSD card.

I broke my camera :( Can it be fixed?

I have this camera:

https://www.sixfix.com/onlinestore/share/ProdImages/i843.jpg

and I dropped it with it on, it fell on the front part (like the zoom lens thing) so it's like halfway pushed in and whenever I turn it on it goes BEEPBEEPBEEP then turns back off.

can this be fixed?

All camera's can be fixed (obviously depending on the extent of the damage) but generally it isn't very economical to repair a camera unless you have some kind of insurance or extended warranty covering it.

At my camera store, repairs generally cost £100-£200 (which would be approx $150-$300), and considering most camera's that come in for repair are 2-3 years old, it means that its actually cheaper to buy a new up to date camera, than to repair an older camera.

For Example: A camera with only 3x Optical zoom, 6 mega pixels, no face detection etc, could cost the same to reapair as it would cost to buy a new camera with 5x Optical Zoom, 10 megapixels and all the latest features and functions.

However, if you still wish to have the camera repaired, then shop around and get yourself some repair quotes, you'll find that different repair agents or camera store repair prices can vary greatly, also try contacting the camera manufacturer themselves who can often repair camera's cheaper than a third party repair agent/camera store. And remember if you do get the camera repaired, to ensure that you leave it with a qualified/registered repair agent or legitimate camera retailer.
