Do DSLR's have built in UV protection on their image sensors?
I was looking around for a new 72mm UV filteqr for my lens but most of the shops I checked out only stocked 'filter protectors' which were just as expensive as the UV/Haze filters. I read somewhere that DSLR image sensors don't need UV/haze protection like film does because they have built in UV protection out of the box. I don't know if this is true or not, i'd like to know before i go out to buy one later in the week.
Camera sensors are not sensitive to UV light. UV filters are a hangover from film days when film would fog in the presence of UV light.
Their only use on a digital camera is to stop you getting finger marks on the lens. The reasoning being that it's easier to clean the UV lens than run the possibility of damaging the multi-coating that's applied to many top lenses.
There are also some that say it protects the front element of the lens from impact damage but all that it will do in such circumstances is grind shards of glass into the front element, either at time of impact or when cleaning up later.
If it were necessary, lens manufacturers would add a $10 filter, give it a fancy name and charge $50. They seem to think that a lens cap is sufficient.
