Pro Telephoto Lens
Which telephoto lens is more versitile/ better for taking pictures outside?
I am on a very tight budget and need to have lenses that "kill two birds with one stone." I need something that will be great for portrait shots and also great for sports shots such as baseball. I have a Canon Rebel EOS XS and I'm looking at either the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras OR the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM Telephoto Zoom Lens. Pros, please help! I really want to get my business going, but I don't know much yet. At all. Thank you!
Some will say that for an APC-S camera, your best lens for portraiture lies between 50-70m because for a "full-frame" (ie., 35mm frame) the best lens for portraits lies between 70-105mm (they say) and doing the maths, (apprx. 1.5x for similar angle-of-view/perspective) they get that result. However, your depth-of-field for any given aperture is also increases with the reduction of focal length so using a slightly longer lens may add benefit. The other option is to open your aperture wider (and possibly reduce quality but I won't worry too much about that with modern lenses). Since neither lens can open wider than f4, I would go for the longer lens for the sports shots.
Portraits are done best with a full-frame or medium format camera if and when shallow depth-of-field is required but that is not always the case, now is it? A great portrait can be done with a 35mm lens (on either a 35mm or APC-S format) if you know what effect you want.
Their is a rule about the best lens for portraits (based on perspective distortions and preventing flatness) but the rules can always be broken if doing so improves your image.
Also, consider third-party equivalents such as Tamron, Sigma et al. You get about the same (or better) quality for less (or similar) $$$. Based on what people are saying here about the Canon 75-300mm, I would pass on it.
