Polarizing Filter Lens
I need a good all-purpose lens filter. Any ideas?
I'm looking for a good all-around lens filter that I can use and keep on my lens most of the time. I've heard of UV filters and polarizing filters...but if you could only choose one, which would you choose? Any help on the subject would be appreciated.
Filters are specialized accessories... not everyone needs or wants filters. By nature, there's no such thing as an "all-purpose" filter.
There are three filters left that have any usefulness in digital photography:
-UV filter. I have one of these for each of my lenses, and leave it on 99% of the time. It has no effect on the image (as long as you don't have a crappy quality one), it serves simply to protect the actual lens glass from the outside world.
-Polarizer. This enhances colors and cuts reflections. I use it whenever I'm shooting landscapes, or just whenever I feel the shot could use a little extra saturation. This happens most often in nature photography. As a side effect, the polarizer also blocks roughly 2 stops of light from entering the lens. This generally results in longer shutter speeds. When shooting on a tripod, this doesn't matter. When shooting handheld, it usually requires me to compromise on ISO and/or Aperture. For this reason, I rarely shoot handheld with a polarizer.
-Neutral Density filter. This does nothing but block some light from entering the lens. Different strengths of ND filters block different amounts. I use these primarily to extend an exposure to be longer, for instance when I am trying to capture motion (like a waterfall).
Any other filter's effects can be replicated easily, and with more control, in Photoshop/Lightroom/GIMP/whatever you use.
