little help with UV FILTERS, POLARIZERS, ETC..?

hi.. im new to photography.. can u tell me in detail what actually are polarizers, uv filters, etc.. i recently bought a canon eos 500d nd a friend suggested me to use uv filter.. so plzz tell me wht it is and other things too for enhanced quality image...

A UV filter has only a small effect on the final image, cutting down glare from strong sunshine. Its main use is really to protect the front element of the lens. If you drop your camera on the ground and the filter gets scratched it's no big deal, but if you don't have one and damage the glass you've just destroyed something valuable. I definitely recommend a UV filter, especially if you aren't going to experiment with other filter types. Remember to make sure that the lens is properly cleaned before putting on the filter for the first time, and then just leave it attached.

Other filters can have a more dramatic effect, you'll probably want to look at a circular polarizing filter first. Scientifically, this type of filter cuts down only light that is polarized in a particular direction. Practically, you mostly use it to get more dramatic blue skies, or to view the surface of a body of water without the reflections from the sky. This fits on to the front of your lens just like the UV filter (you can sometimes combine multiple filters together but only a small number before the filter itself interferes with the image), but it usually is mounted in a way that lets the filter rotate so that different directions of polarized light are cut out. You can use it whenever there is a source of strongly polarized light in the image, as I said this is usually from a non-cloudy sky or from reflections. You can sometimes use a polarizing filter for really abstract images, thin plastic films and some artificial surfaces can produce really wacky colors when viewed through a polarizing filter.

The next useful type is a ND filter (stands for Neutral Density). This is just a slightly tinted filter that cuts down the amount of light getting to the camera. Use this when exposure times are too short or to effectively produce low-light conditions when in strong lighting. If you have a tripod and you want to take a picture of a landscape in the daytime with a large depth-of-field (near elements and faraway elements in focus), you would reduce aperture to get the focus you want and may need to add one of these filters to keep exposure under control. The polarizing filters above actually cut out a fair amount of light which makes them act slightly like a ND filter. You can get different grades of filter, but a 1 or 2 stop gray filter would be useful for beginner/intermediate use.

The last type would be 'artistic' filters. These include colored tinted or patterned filters. If you want a skyline to look like it's covered in orange fog, get one of these - think Jerry Bruckheimer movies! These are not general purpose filters and not recommended unless you really want a particular effect, you may find it easier to fake a filter effect in post-processing (photoshop). You may need to get a special filter mount to use these, commonly they are square in shape so wouldn't mount directly to a circular lens.

For price, a UV or polarizing filter should be less than 20 pounds or so. Make sure to get one that matches the size of your lens, this should be written on the front and measured in millimeters. Artistic filters can get much more expensive, especially if you get non-circular ones and need a mount as well.
