Y does the picture meter tell me that i can take less pics on auto but more on any other function Canon 450D?

Why does the picture meter tell me that i can take less pictures on the auto functions [Auto, Portrait, Landscape, Close-up, Sports, Night Portrait and flash off] but more on the creative functions [P, Tv, Av, M and A-DEP] on a Canon 450D? Each function is on the large photo setting, and is a universal setting for all functions.

take a picture with the different settings and then check the file size of the photos. my guess is it is bigger on the auto functions.
