Camera techniques...........HELP PLZ ?

So I have a Olympus Om10 35mm film camera with a 50mm lens and I have black and white film in it at the moment. What I am wondering is what are some good techniques to get really good professional looking photos. Since it's not digital it's not like I can just take a photo then review it on a LCD screen after its taken and judge if its good or not. So I just need a little help on good techniques on better lighting and how to pick out the best background for the subject and just things like that. I would appreciate all the help I can get.

First, if you don't have the Owner's Manual for your camera you really need to get a copy.

Second, order this book from Amazon or eBay: "Object & Image: An Introduction to Photography, Third Edition" by George M. Craven.

You need to learn to really look at your scene before releasing the shutter. Look at the light and pay attention to whether your scene is evenly lit or if there are large areas of light and dark (bright sun on a gravel path surrounded by dark foliage). If you expose for the path then your shadow areas will go black. If you expose for the shadows then your path will be overexposed and washed out. So you'll have to try an average exposure based on a meter reading from each area. Suppose you meter the shadows and get f4 at 1/125 sec. and then meter the brightly lit path and get f16 @ 1/125 sec. Look at the f-stop numbers on your lens and count up from f4 and down from f16 and you'll meet at f8. So try an exposure of f8 at 1/125 sec. Since this is a difficult scene, to be safe we'll try an exposure at f5.6 at 1/125 sec. and one at f11 at 1/125 sec. NOTE that our shutter speed remained constant for all 3 exposures.
