I am 14 and my life is photography! My parents bought me the Sony alpha 350 for Christmas this year but they said I would have to pay for lenses and accessories I am into action and nature photography, I need a lens that is at least 400mm for nature but all the lenses I have looked at are so expensive! I have looked at some mirror lenses and though the have the focal range i need I have heard from many people that they are not that great when it comes to the quality of the image. Any Ideas about a good quality lens that I can afford? My price range is anywhere below $350. Thanks

Sony bought Minolta, who have been making excellent auto-focus cameras and lenses for 20 years (and manual long before that). The Sony Alpha range continues to use the Minolta "A" lens mount (sometimes called "MA" or "MAF" mount).

There are at least 20 years worth of Minolta, Sigma and Tamron "A" mount lenses available used on eBay and from used camera shops, so take your pick of some of the finest AF lenses ever made.

The question is, do you really need 400mm or do you *think* you need 400mm? Take a look at images taken on an APS-C camera using a 300mm lens and you will see that the equivalent focal length on your Sony is around 450mm anyway. Look up the difference between APS-C and Full-Frame cameras for an explanation why.

If you decide that 400mm is what you need, then you could try x1.4 or x1.5 or x2.0 Teleconverters on a Minolta 70-210mm f4 "beer can" lens. A x2.0 Teleconverter will make the 210mm a 420mm but adds a couple of f stops making the lens a f6.0 or so, still ok on a clear day though.

You can get the Minolta 70-210mm f4 "beer can" off eBay, it is an excellent lens. I have one on my Sony A200. Be aware that it is the f4 that you want NOT the cheaper f4.5-5.6.

For the same price you can get a new 70-300mm Sigma or Tamron, but these lenses are not a constant f4 aperture, so at 300mm they will be f8, so requiring a brighter day than the Minolta f4 would. The higher the Teleconverter the more f stops are added, so a x1.4 or x1.5 may be better.

Remember with mirrors you are stuck in manual, but there is the unique Minolta 500mm f8 Mirror which is I believe the only auto-focus mirror ever made!

Have a browse on eBay for Minolta, Sigma and Tamron lenses for the Minolta/Sony "A" mount. Avoid the MC or MD mount, these are the older manual lenses and will not fit your Sony without an adapter.
