Wide angle or fisheye conversion lenses?

In regards to super zoom compact digital cameras,

I'd like to get one of these, if not both, but from what I understand you would need to zoom in so you can't see the tube adapter. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of having one of these lenses if you have to zoom in? Also, what do the numbers mean that's associated with the lens?

ex.
0.36X, 0.45X, 0.5X

smaller number = wider view?

The smaller the number, the wider view. A shorter focal length gives you a wider view. So if the focal length of your camera lens was 8 mm, a 0.5x convertor makes it a 4 mm focal length. A 0.45x would make it an even shorter focal length and therefore wider still.

These type of convertors tend to be very expensive. You can get some that are not made by the camera manufacturer but the best of those are quite expensive too, and the rest are not worth considering.

You would only need to use the wide adapter at the widest setting of your zoom. It is only optically corrected to work with the widest setting. The tube adapter comment would apply to the opposite type of convertor, a telephoto adapter, with a conversion factor of 1.5x for example.
