Filters for shooting sunsets // sunrises?

I have just bought a new lens, and I am planning to do some sunrise//sunset shooting. What kind of filter would you recommend? A ND maybe (if yes, which step)?
I am not looking for a filter creating 'fake' sunset colours, just something that would eliminate unwanted flaws (shiny dots, etc).

Polarizers are great, but you might consider a split ND filter with a 2 stop cut on half of the filter. Put the line of demarcation at the horizon so that you take 2 stops of exposure out of the sky. This will let you get a decent exposure of the land details without blowing out the sky. This can be a little confining in composition, so plan to crop later.
