Size of the image sensor on the Sony DSC-W90 compared with the DSC-W100?
Hello everyone, my old Sony 3.2 MP Cybershot P8 has stopped working (the lens cover stopped opening). I love this camera, but since it has been broken, so I decided to start to buy a new camera. I heard that Sony and Canon are the best but I prefer the Sony. After doing a fair amount of research, it seems that the two main cameras in my budget are Sony's DSC-W90 and the DSC-W100. These appear to be more or less equal than the MP (12 for the W200, a 8.1 for the W90) and the size of the image sensor (1/2.5 for W90, 1/1.7 for W200) .... Since I know almost anything over 5 or 6 is exaggerated, I'm not concerned with the MP more .. . My main concern is the smallest "Image sensor" in the W90. Some of the reviews I've read have said that Sony is packing too much MP on a sensor that is too small and this is affecting image quality. Will this be a major problem? Do I pay the extra $ 100 for the 200? Thanks!
I would go for the bigger sensor. Sensor size is more confused by the archaic form described. Think about as if there were fractions decimals involved. 1 / 1 is greater than 1 / 2. 1/1.7 "is larger than 1/2.5 ". As a general guideline, the bigger the sensor, the better the image quality. 1/2.5" is probably the size of the sensor most common point and shoot digital cameras. It is about 5 mm by 4 mm, or 20 square millimeters. 1/1.8 is 7.2 mm by 5.3 mm or 38 mm square. I do not know the exact dimensions of 1/1.7 ", but would be a little larger than the 1/1.8", but mot much larger than it would offer no real advantage in image quality. "The smaller the sensor, the harder it is to achieve this. You will see an explanation (if you want more details) On this page: http://www.photo.net/learn/optics/dofdigital/ Another thing you may notice is that the "super zoom" point and shoot cameras tend to have. The 1/2.5 "sensor since the focal length is a function of the size of the image as well as the camera is designed is able to achieve this end zoom power. (10x - 12x is common) The smaller the sensor, the greater the "objective factor". A Canon Powershot S3 IS-It is said that a "focal length" of 36 mm to 432 mm. Given the objective factor of 6.03x for 1/2.5 "sensors, the real focal length this lens is about 6 mm to 72 mm. This is a mini-tutorial I made to compare 10 MP sensor in a digital SLR (DSLR) and a point and shoot (P & S) camera. I have tried to keep everything on an equal footing with no unequal crops original images. Both images were taken at the equivalent of 75 mm from about 1,000 feet away. Preview this size and displacement through the image to compare the resolution at various points in the images. For me, the sensor P & S is almost like an impressionist painting compared to the SLR sensor digital. Well, I do not know if we are comparing pixel count or sensor size here, but take a look anyway and see what you think about the differences.
