What is the difference between the different quality of hoya circular polarizing filters?
I have a Nikon D40, and almost no budget. Which type of filter will be enough for nice pictures on this camera?
You only need two filters. The first one is to protect your nice lens. It can be either a "skylight" or "uv" filter. It keeps things from getting on your lens and possibly scratching it. It is much less expensive to replace the filter than to have a lens repaired. Get this filter first and put it on your lens ... ASAP.
The other is the circular polarizing filter. It does two things very well. It reduces reflections in reflective surfaces like still water and windows and it can darken the sky to a deeper blue, thus making what clouds there are in the sky, stand out more.
I use the Standard filters. There may be some photographic application that might require the use of a Multi-Coated filter (most lenses are multi-coated so that could be argued) and for about 25% more they are not that more expensive.
The SMC and Pro 1 filters are for the purists I would think. At 150 to 270% more for them, I would wait and have a client pay for those if they are really needed.
