corrct exposure in widely varying brightness?

Is there ever really a way of getting a nice beautiful exposure if a subject is very light in part of the frame and darker in another part...

Eg i was taking a pic of some lovely flower on a path leading up to a very brightly painted shop door. The door was an amazing colour of blue and red. No matter how much bracketng I did, the very light flowers were overexposed and the door, under exposed...to varying degrees..I got a few decent pics, but nothing like the spectacular image i was expecting. Is there a trick to this?

IS this where a graduated neutral density filter comes in handy, or any other types of filters of add ons??

If the dynamic range (brightness range) is too great for the film or sensor, there are a few ways to go:

1. Try using lighting (check out strobist.blogspot.com to learn this art) to bring up the darker parts of the picture, if possible, to bring everything into a manageable range.

2. Graduated neutral density filters can help if you're dealing with a bright sky and darker landscape, or similarly laid out situation, but they don't sound like they will help in your specific case...

3. HDR (High Dynamic Range) merges in Photoshop are another option. This combines the best exposed portions of a number of different identically composed (read: use a tripod) exposures into one composite image. This is usually best done with about 5 shots each one full stop from its neighbors. File-->Automate-->Merge to HDR
