Betta a good starter fish?

The hubby and I bought a Goldfish starter kit with the intention of getting a goldfish. Its a 1.7 gallon tank with a filter along with some gravel and a fake plant and conditioner. I knew not to put any fish in a new tank without running the new filter for a while. We set it up on Sat (adding the conditioner) and its been running since. After reading up I knew that it wouldn't support a gold fish... so we are getting a betta. We eventually want to upgrade to a 5 gal and we plan on only having the one betta. What else should I get to make my fishy comfy in his tank for now? And do you think my tank is ready for him?

no, you are not cruel for puttinga betta in a 1.7gal this is actually above the minimum (which is 1gal i would say) so just make sur that the filter isnt too strong for him cuz bettas dont really like strong currents, make sure you are feeding him the right food (betta food) he will also eat tropical fish food,but would be less colorful. if you want to spoil him, you can buy him live or freez-dried brine shrimp they love those. you may want to think about getting a heater now they sell mini heaters. you dont really need a heater as long as you can keep the water warm enough 72-80 besides, bettas are very tolerant and hardy. and it would be awesome if you could buy him live plants or bulbs that will grow in his tank. you should use aquarium salt, it prevents diseases and reduces stress.
