What is web content filter and internet filter?

The internet is a bittersweet tool for mankind. Though it has many advantages, it suffers from certain disadvantages as well. In a school where students are provided with internet facilities to use it as their reference supplement, they are spending maximum time making new friends in the chatrooms. Parents would definitely not appreciate owing to the ethical obligation that the school authorities must bear. An internet filter is a software/hardware that has the capability of restricting access to the web pages which are specified as undesirable, when such a filter is installed in our computer.

At the corporate sector if employees do not follow the basic rules of work ethics and visit the websites that are inappropriate at least during office hours, is posing a great problem for these organizations. There are billions of web pages being created everyday; blocking each site or URL is not an intelligent idea. A web content filter using a filtration technique that is technically advanced. It analyzes the content of the website and looks for certain words and phrases in it. It makes meaningful decisions about pages, which previously have not been screened by the user. In each website the occurrence of specific words and phrases is closely looked at.

The web content filter assigns specific value to these words. These values can be positive or negative. The filter software uses its intelligence while assigning a value. “Breast cancer” shall be passed by as it is a disease and not an adult content. After summation of the values, if the value crosses a certain predefined threshold value then the page is restricted from the viewer. So, dynamic web filtering is possible by using a web content filter; thanks to its Artificial Intelligence.

Moreover, a web content filter allows you to pre-configure a large number of unwanted topics such as “sex”, “gamble”, “drugs”, etc. The filter software will always scrutinize the content properly before preventing the user from viewing it.

Internet is a one-stop location where you will find people from all ages. With computers finding its place in the homes of people along with schools and library have made children glued to the computer screen. Though through the internet lots of valuable information can be gathered but one cannot forget that some websites are not meant for children. Even the most innocent search on “Google” can result in websites with pornographic content.

Viruses, Trojans and bugs can infect your computer when children download unknown content on these websites. An internet filter has come to our rescue in order to stop these practices. When an internet filter is installed in your computer, it would scan sites and incoming files and block them if it contains undesirable keywords. The internet filter and web content filter could allow the child to view only certain predefined sites and restrict the access to the rest. It should be checked that your internet filter is not filtering necessary information.
