Converter All Nikkor
Are Adapter/Converter Lenses worth it?
I am an aspiring photographer, and I am looking into expanding my collection of lenses. I keep coming across these Adapter/Converter lenses that apparently convert an existing lens into a Macro/Wide-angle/fish-eye lens.
They cost anywhere from $8.00-$100.00, which is clearly WAY cheaper than a Nikkor 12-24mm at $1400.00, or example.
My question is: Do they really work? A part of me cant imagine how an $8.00 lens attachment would produce a quality photograph. I've read that wide angle attachments will likely blur the outside corners of the photograph. Is that true?
Do they change how any of the functions work (auto-focus, etc)?
I do realize that you generally have to buy another sort of adapter ring in order to attach any given converter to one of your lenses.
Any opinions/input/experiences would be greatly appreciated!

There are some filters that will degrade your pictures and some that will not.
wide angle filters will degrade your image and yes, cause blurring around the outside. they may also mess with your auto focus because you are adding more glass between your sensor the outside world, and these filters will usually 'eat' tiny amounts of light. you wont notice from your viewfinder, but you will when your autofocus starts trying to work.
macro filters or 'extension tubes' are great on the other hand! they do not contain any glass or optics in them. they only add empty space between your camera's sensor and the lens. This means that it will not degrade your optics, so the picture will be as good as the lens you are using it on. Although these extension tubes do mess with autofocus a bit, but most macro photography involves stationary cameras with very very finely tuned manual focus adjustments. i use a set made by kenko. they come in 3 lengths. the longer the length the more 'macro' it becomes.
also for tube lengths - do not use a tube with a mm length that is longer than the lens you are using. (with a 50mm lens do not add 60mm of extension, or it will cause your focus points to be INSIDE of your lens. it is a very strange effect when you can focus on the minute dust and scratches that are on the outside of your lens)
in short; i love my extension tubes and use them all the time, but when i purchased a fisheye (or wideangle) filter, i sold it not more than 4 months later because for me, image quality comes first.
