Sky TV Embraces Circular Polarized 3D Glasses To Deliver Next Genertation 3D

At the end of last year, BSkyB demoed what could well be a big part of the way forward for sports broadcasting : the transmission of sporting events in 3D, employing a piar of circular polarized 3d glasses.

The system, which is at present being developed, uses a standard Sky+ box to decode the 2 separate photographs wanted to create the 3-D effect. Users then simply view the screen thru 2 circular polarized 3D glasses.

3D technology has been adopted in Hollywood, with a number of films being filmed and released in 3D where the user in the theatre uses two circular polarized 3D Glasses. Despite having the facility to use their current satellite receiver, users will be made to upgrade their television sets. However, makers believe that new 3D Televisions will cost not more than the standard HD-ready plasma set. The 3D television set that BSkyB used in its demonstration at its HQ in Osterley, London, now ships at over £2,000, but pros have foretold that the price of the technology will drop seriously, especially if it proves preferred.

"From our point of view this is just the subsequent stage of our invention plan moving on from Sky+, from HD and now to 3D is how we see things might go in the future," expounded BSkyB's Head of Product, Design and Creativity, Brian Lenz. "What we are taking a look at today is firstly that we are going to do it, and we think we're going to be able to do it and at a quality level that makes it engaging to start to take a look at whether there's a liking for it from the consumer." the fulfilment of 3D television in viewers' houses is obviously still some years off, however as Sky have demonstrated thru the trials, watching your favourite team in three dimensions from the comfort of the settee may actually be a common-or-garden occurrence in the fairly near future.

However, whether spectators will be lured to fork out on a new television set certainly depends on the standard of the final product on offer.

who makes calumet lens filters (circular polarizers)?

i heard that they are made by hoya ... that being a very reputable brand. if so their prices are very aggressive. i am looking to get a circular polarizing multi-coated filter for my 18-200 ef-s lens.

That would be correct and the reason they are 'aggressive(?)' is because they aren't nearly as good as B&W, Singh-Ray and some of the other German glass. They are still good though.
