The Nikon D90 does a whole lot for little money

When you first get the Nikon D90 in your possession you will notice that it's very light weight and shaped perfectly to fit in your hand. Once you turn the D90 on and start to snap some pictures Your going to feel like you robbed Nikon, the image quality compared to the price is incredible. High Shutter Speed gives me a black Picture?

I recently purchased a Nikon D3000 Camera and whenever i set the shutter speed above 1/200 all i get is a pitch black picture. I set the shutter speed is Shutter Priority Mode if that matters , and even using 1/200 I have to use the flash. This is happining in a fully lit room. The lenses that i used while this is happening is the Nikon 18-55mm as well as the 55-200mm lenses.
What can i do to use higher shutter speeds and not get a black photo?

I am a beginner so please answer in a way i can understand.

The Appature is set at 5.6f and the lense cap is taken off

You have to make sure that you are exposing the scene correctly.

Look at the light meter in your viewfinder and make sure it is indicating -0-, or is not in the "-" side of the analog meter reading.

To assure the highest shutter speed, use the aperture priority mode with the lens wide open. If the shutter speed is to slow, increase the ISO until you do get the shutter speed you want.

At high ISO, you can expect some noise, that can be reduced later in post production by different programs ... I happen to use Noise Ninja. While you can reduce noise later if you need to, you cannot get rid of blur caused by camera and/or subject movement

Nice camera by the way. I got to use one a little last night at a pre-party for a local spring training campus.

I could not believe how light it was in comparison to my D300 with battery grip, wow. It seems to have even more goodies (features) than I would have expected.
