Which camera would you recommend? Canon or Nikon?

I'd recommend the Olympus E520 or E420, but like virtually every other respondent here thats based on my purchase decisions. but unlike many repondenets here thats based on my requirement, my preferences, rather than plumping for the brand thats most heavily advertised or the brand thats rumoured to be 'the' best.

I chose an Olympuis becuase its well proven advantages, primarily to do with the lenses.. all 4/3rds lenses are new designed from scratch for digital, they are smaller, lighter have a 2x's multiplication factor. take jsut as good photos as the competition (with the sole exception the low light performance is not as good as the newer Nikons, but as I don't take many photos in low light its not an issue for me).

Of course one of its main detractions is that it doesn't get you many bragging rights when self proclaimed or pretend expert photographers meet up in some spotty kids bedroom and talk of the number of focussing points, the focussing speed, the blah di blah this feature. The Olympus has features in plenty where it matters (the best anti dust system, in camera stablisation, superb range of high quality optics (not a film 35 lens rebadged and banged out on an unsuspecting public).

me biassed, of course I am, I bought an Olympus, and just like other people who bought Nikons, or Canons or whatever, they too will usually say their camera is best.

for what its worth I don't think you will find much to choose between the dSLR's from any the manufacturers.

last time I looked there were some killer deals on Sony Alpha cameras.

but decide what you want a camera for, waht images you want, where you want to take images.. if its outdoors then the weatherproof Pentax may be a better bet, if its lightness a 4/3rdds camera. if ts snaps seriously consider a point and shoot. they are smaller, more portable, less intrusive, and theres no shame in having a point & shoot if thats what is to had to take the photos you want. heck having a disposable film camera may be the best camera if thats the one you have to had when you see that image you want to capture. if the camera is smaller and unobtrusive you are more likely to have it with you, and thats what matters. its the images you take, not the gear you have.

a dSLR doesn't magially make you a fantastic photographer. buying a Canon or A Nikon due to the laughable claim professionals use them is dumb.. its the grey matter controlling the shutter that has the biggest impact on photo quality
