I'm a beginne photographer. I have a new Canon EOS XSi. How do I get good night-time, under the lights,?
pictures of my boy playing football? I have an EF 80-200mm zoom lens.
This is my approach. To select Shutter Priority, initially at a 1/125sec, and ISO1600. The idea is to freeze action, and use the high ISO to support a high Shutter Speed, to do so. The XSi will automatically then select your Aperture. (I suspect your 80-200mm lens has a f/4.5-5.6 Aperture range.)
(Of course an alternative is to select Manual, set the Aperture at the widest f/top..lowest numerical number, set the Shutter Speed, and the ISO. It's the same as the above, so I don't usually work sports images in Manual.
If your image is acceptably bright, and you're freezing the action, you can try decreasing the ISO to improve image quality. Check your LCD to see how your images are, at least for the first few photographs. If you're getting blur, increase the shutter speed, but keep an eye on the image brightness.
If you have an image editing program, which will process RAW files, I suggest you shoot in RAW; it will make your processing much easier. If you Don't have an editing program which can process RAW files, DON'T shoot in raw; shoot large JPEG format.
Unfortunately, ANY flash you have, will not be of any use, at football-game distance.
