By painting pictures a thousand words
Portrait photography is probably the best type of photography that defines human interest. Although regarded as the easiest area of photography compared to others, portrait photography appeals to many people and photographers alike because it is very interesting and stimulating.
Since it's all about people taking photos, a portrait photographer must have a genuine interest in people who would become his issues. They should worry about and people are natural talkers to break the ice.
Above all, portrait photographers should also possess the ability observe the characteristic gestures and expressions subjects and can easily identify a person better side and angle.
GETTING STARTED
If you think you have what it takes to be a portrait photographer, then you should familiarize yourself with the different areas of portraiture. Basically, the rates are not different picture depending on the use or purpose.
Some of the common categories under which fall into portrait photography are portraits of friends and fans family, pictures of people at a social gathering, editorial portraiture, where the images are taken by photographers from newspapers, magazines and other publications, use, Pictures of art, where you take photos for display in museums and art galleries, formal portraits where the subjects presented with a view to a photograph and informal portraits or "action shots" where the subjects do not intentionally pose for the camera.
Things to consider and reconsider
Many photographers agree that the intention of the photographer is what differentiates a picture, apart from a portrait. If you want to try portrait photography, here are some of things you might consider:
1. House. In the picture, any 35mm SLR (single-lens-reflex) are fine. If you can afford a digital SLR is better because you can save on film and processing. Never opt for a zoom point and shoot, since no scheme can provide acute and accurate results.
2. Lenses. Sometimes you may need to highlight or emphasize a specific feature of your subject at a distance. These are the different types of lenses are for-to highlight or hide any better or worse feature of matter.
Many professional photographers suggest that the lenses of 300 mm or 600 mm, but for starters, a typical portrait lenses that are between 90 and 135 mm long for 35mm cameras are fine. Nikon 105/1.8 (MF only), Canon 100 / 2 USM and Canon 135 / 2 USM are some pictures recommended lenses available on the market.
3. Movies. From digital cameras no longer require the use of rolls of film, This should not be a big problem for you. All you need is to find a good compact flash memory that has a high to produce high-resolution photos. But if you have a manual camera or SLR, buy black and white and color film to offer options to their customers.
4. Location. An ideal place for portrait photography shoot of a study. In addition to providing adequate working space to work, have a photo studio also ensures the security of your team. But if you can not lift a study, however, should find a space that can provide a work area.
In creating a study, consider rental costs, size, accessibility to the target market and the facilities it offers. If you take pictures of the environment, do not need a large study partly because their outbreaks will depend on the environment that create big impacts on your topic.
5. Lighting. If you have a portrait studio, consider the sources of light would flatter the subject. If the outbreak is outdoors, you should choose a cloudy day to avoid shadows in your photos.

What would you recommend lenses Canon EOS 40D to be used for / Fall Foliage Landscape ...?
... Photos? I am not new to digital cameras, but I am new to digital SLR with interchangeable lenses. I have the Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM standard zoom lens, but I am looking other lens options (for travel photos, fall foliage pictures, etc..) I would pick up a larger zoom and maybe a wide-angle lens, but I wondered what that other people use for their main (most used) lens for outdoor shots?
I use Canon 20D with two lenses. Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS lens stabilized image. With Canon 40D would work as 27 - 135mm (Canon bodies crop factor 1.6). It ranges from wide angle to telephoto low (135 mm). Very convenient for travel and outdoors. However, this objective will overlap your lens (45 - 216 mm with 1.6 crop factor). Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Image Stabilizer lens. Canon 40D to function as 112 to 480 mm. Therefore, this combination covers very wide range (from 28 to 480mm), which is very convenient for travel, outdoor, landscape and other situations. My main goal (80% of time) is 17-85mm. Lens (28 - 135 mm) with Canon 40D function as 45 - 215mm. If you want to extend to a wide angle, review Canon EF 18-55mm (27-85mm with Canon 40D). There is expansive lens (~ $ 140) do not overlap significantly its current objectives. For option could try Canon telephoto 100-400mm (160 - 640mm with Canon 40D). It is quite expansive though. Tip: try, where possible, the current lens. It would help you better understand what you want. It is September, lens and its fall foliage is almost perfect.
