Camera Reviews: Nikon D5000 Digital SLR Camera (with 18-55mm lens)

The Nikon D5000 digital SLR camera is the much anticipated replacement model to the wonderful Nikon D80 that was considered to be a top-of-the-line model for quite a long time. Overall, the D5000 did live up to all the hype and expectations. For its price, this model comes with an impressive feature kit. It comes with an 18-55mm lens that is very sharp and has good focus. It uses a 12.3MP image sensor.

The Nikon D5000 digital SLR camera is also extremely fast. From a cold start, it is ready to take its first shot is just 0.2 seconds. It shot-to-shot time is at just 0.5 seconds and a typical shutter lag time of 0.3 seconds. The only other model (in its class) in the market that matches this speed is the Canon EOS Rebel T1i.

The quality of the images taken on the Nikon D5000 digital SLR camera is extremely good. The images were well saturated and bright. The colors were also very accurate (realistic). The quality of the images was also good at high ISOs. It can also record HD videos at 720p. Although acceptable, the quality of the HD videos were nothing much to shout about.

Another great feature on this model is the 2.7-inch rotating LCD display. It flips downwards and can be rotated at various angles, making it easier to take shots in odd positions. It can even be rotated inwards (facing the camera) so that you don’t need to use a protective plastic cover to prevent it from scratching. The only downside to it is that it is hard to view under bright sunlight. The Nikon D5000 digital SLR camera can also be used with the optional Nikon GPS device and also a built-in wireless flash control.

What lens for Canon 350D?

I dont know which lens is good for my camera. I am currently a student and want to upgrade my lens 18-55(kit).

I am not sure about the numbers on the lens like 18-55mm. Wad does this numbers represent? I want a lens which has a good zoom and wide-angle and can go for a good macro shot. priority now would be a good wide-angle lens.

The best wide angle lens is the Canon EFS10-22mm f3.5-4.5 or the Canon EF 17-40 F/4 L. I lean towards the ultra wide 10-22mm because of its extreme lack of distortion and the fact that it does not fisheye the wide angle images. The 17-40mm L is priced in the same ball park. It is not quite as wide but is weather sealed and has slightly better glass. Both lenses are fabulous and relatively distortion free.

If you are a student needing a quality lens with a slight wide angle, I have to steer you toward the EF 24-105mm f/4 L. This is not as fast as the f/2.8, but it has exceptional quality and is possibly the best walk around lens that you can get as a student. Plus it is Canon L glass so this lens is an investment in your potential career as a photographer.
