Film and film camera question?
So I've been interested in Lomography for a couple of years and have been waiting for a Lomo camera, but I was at a garage sale and bought this fake want to be Nikon film for $ 5 and is my first film camera and I know it's a film camera 35 mm. I went to Sammy's camera to buy b & w 35 mm film, but the guy asked either 100, 200, 300, 400, what did he mean? I asked that was new to the film and gave me a package of film that says 400 on it and said its faster? what does this mean? And one can get same results in a back and a standard film camera? Because I have the feeling that the camera I have now some light will leak in it. Also has a flash that says it all, normal, and the TV, do what I mean? THANK YOU for your time and answers (:
I will do my best to answer these in order. The type number of the camera shop was referring to when asked if he wanted 100, 200, 300 or 400 was the ISO. In simple terms, the higher the ISO number, the more sensitive the film is to light. So, basically, a higher ISO, you can get faster shutter speeds. Speeds shutter are good when they're trying to capture movement, especially when holding the camera instead of using a tripod. The disadvantage is that the increase ISO films have grain visible in them. 400 ISO film is a good place to start. If you find you like your job tripod and shutter speed not a problem, you can download at a lower ISO. Most of the film shooting (regardless of whether it is in black and white, color, or slides) is ISO 100, sometimes lower. If you find you're shooting in low light a lot, a higher ISO may be necessary, something like T-Max 3200, for example. "Faster" the movie only results in higher ISO, similar to how "fast" lens is a lens that can open the wider opening, so let in more light. The thing is that Lomo cameras are very popular so called lo-fi photography, which means low fidelity. It is difficult to explain what is in the words, but usually gets some washed out colors, which some describe as a "vintage" look. In fact, a higher ISO film can be good for you if you like film grain "vintage" feel.
